January 2004

Dennis DeYoung continues to remind us why his unique voice and memorable melodies have elevated so many of his songs into classics. Whether with Styx, going solo, doing Broadway and now performing with an orchestra, Dennis has covered much diverse musical ground in his career. Currently, you will find him on tour and on television as well. The new 2CD live album and DVD beautifully celebrate 30 years of fine songwriting.

Congratulations to the three winners of our trivia contest!

Tim Halloran
Shawn Spiegelhalter
Laurie Muffler

As Dennis says, "winners are losers who gave it one more try". That certainly was the case here as all our eventual winners initially lost the contest because of question #2. However, our small hint below seemed to "show them the way."

1 What was Dennis DeYoung's first Top 10 hit?
"Desert Moon" was Dennis' first Top 10 hit. Styx doesn't count.
2 What is Dennis' middle name? (Hint: It is not "Acan")
Allen
3 In what year did Dennis compose "Lies" (from "Man of Miracles")
He didn't write it. It was a cover version of the Knickerbockers hit.
4 Dennis wrote "Babe" for Suzanne in 1978. What was the occasion?
It was her 30th birthday.
5 What's the B-side of "Desert Moon"?
"Gravity"
Next month we will have more trivia. Up for grabs will
be 5 autographed copies of the new LIVE CD...Stay Tuned!

Our host, Dave Harris, recently sat down with longtime friend Dennis DeYoung to talk about the current tour, the new releases, baseball and much more in this exclusive Real Audio interview:

Interview, Part 1 (56k Stream) Dennis talks about the new tour and album, including the 3 new songs. (7:13 min.)
Interview, Part 2 (56k Stream) Dennis talks about performing apart from Styx, his website and baseball. (5:22 min.)
Interview, Part 3 (56k Stream) Dennis talks about touring, the music he's currently listening to, wife Suzanne's new book and the song he was inspired to write for it, plus more. (4:42 min.)

Mansfield, OH Radio, September 2001   (56K Stream)
Dave has decided to release this rare interview from his personal collection. This interview was recorded on September 26, 2001. As you know it was just two weeks after 9-11. Dave was the Program Director for WYHT. Dave and his staff decided to raise money for the 9-11 victims. They held a request-a-thon. People pledged money to hear ANY song they wanted. Dave asked Dennis if he would "perform" a song via phone for the highest bidder of Dennis' services. Here is a rare interview that Dennis gave just after 9-11. It's very insightful, and typical DeYoung genius. You'll also hear Dennis perform live via phone for the winner. Enjoy!  (20min.)
Bluefield, WV Radio, March 2003   (56K Stream)
Dave Harris has taken a March 2003 interview with Dennis out of his personal archives. This was conducted during Dave's morning radio show with his co-host Rob Humphrey. This is not a Retro Rewind related interview. This was Dave on his morning show in Virginia. The war with Iraq had just started so the mood was a little low key. Dennis was funny as ever. Enjoy!  (11min.)
